Art & Design
Art & design intent, implementation and impact statement.
Intent
Lowercroft's art and design curriculum aims to engage, inspire and challenge pupils to develop their independence skills and confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. We strive to give pupils every opportunity to develop their own ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world around them, as well as learning about art and artists across many different cultures and throughout history. Our curriculum supports pupils to meet the National curriculum end of key stage attainment targets and aims to ensure that all pupils can:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms
Implementation
Our curriculum for art and design has five strands that run throughout each year group. These are:
- Generating ideas
- Using sketchbooks
- Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating and analysing
Children are encouraged to develop their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes, and key skills are revised regularly with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revisit and build on their previous learning.
The formal elements, a key part of the National Curriculum, are also woven throughout each year group and are organised into four core areas: drawing, painting and mixed-media, sculpture and 3D and craft and design. Lessons in art and design are always practical in nature and provide many opportunities which encourage experimental and exploratory learning with pupils using sketchbooks to document their ideas.
Impact
Our curriculum is designed in such a way that children are regularly involved in evaluation, dialogue and decision making about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements they need/want to make. By taking part in regular discussion and decision making processes, children will be able to talk confidently about their own learning journey in art and design, have higher metacognitive skills and develop a growing understanding of how to improve their work.
The overall impact of our curriculum for art and design is that children will:
- Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
- Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language.
- Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.
- Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National curriculum for Art and design.
We want our pupils to leave primary school equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their art and design learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
