History
Intent
At Lowercroft Primary, we believe that the study of history is fundamental to our pupils' understanding of the world and their place within it. Through our history curriculum, we aim to instil in our pupils a deep appreciation for the past, an understanding of how it has shaped the present, and the ability to think critically about the future.
Key Aims
Our intent is for all pupils to develop a secure knowledge of key historical events, figures, and eras, as well as a strong grasp of the overarching historical concepts and themes that underpin the subject. By fostering an enquiry-based approach, we encourage our pupils to ask questions, analyse evidence, and draw their own conclusions about the past, ultimately becoming confident and independent historians.
Content and Skills
Our history curriculum is designed to align closely with the school's broader vision and values, particularly the emphasis on empathy, respect, and curiosity. Pupils will have opportunities to explore diverse perspectives, understand the experiences of different communities, and develop a sense of global citizenship.
Progression
As pupils progress through Key Stages 1 and 2, they will build upon their foundational knowledge and skills, delving deeper into the complexities of the past. The curriculum will be carefully sequenced to ensure that pupils can make connections between different eras and themes, developing a coherent and nuanced understanding of history.
Impact
The impact of Rising Stars History is evidenced through the pupils’ use and understanding of the knowledge, skills, concepts and specialist vocabulary. The use and outcomes of the varied activities, assessments and quizzes provided evidence it. The broad range of approaches for pupils to communicate their knowledge ensures that everyone can demonstrate progression and impact. In particular, it is evidenced by the pupils’ ability, willingness and confidence in addressing and discussing each unit’s key question, giving a response focusing on historical vocabulary, skills and concepts. Pupils understand and can clarify to others what history is and the importance and value of studying the subject. They can explain to others how they are progressing and what they can do to get better in the subject.
Wider Impact
By prioritising the development of subject-specific knowledge, skills, and conceptual understanding, our history curriculum will support the school's efforts to raise standards and ensure that all pupils, including those with SEND and from disadvantaged backgrounds, make strong progress. This, in turn, will contribute to the school's broader goals of fostering deeper learning behaviours, enhancing assessment practises, and improving the quality of teaching.
